At Barrow House, a Grade II-listed former stable was carefully restored and reimagined as a contemporary home, retaining its original footprint, historic masonry and clock-tower remnants as the basis for the design. Sensitive interventions, including a glazed gable bringing light deep into the plan and restrained new openings, enhance functionality while preserving the building’s rhythm and character, resulting in a refined modern home that respects its heritage.
By carefully restoring what mattered and inserting contemporary interventions where they add the most value, the project transforms a historic structure into a distinctive, light-filled home fit for modern living

From the lane the building reads as a quietly composed reinterpretation of its historic stable origins, with the familiar rhythm of brickwork and traditional rooflines preserved and repaired to retain its heritage presence. The primary elevation gestures to its past with enduring masonry and a legible sequence of openings that respect the original proportions, while the redefined entrance, subtly recessed and framed by repaired stone, mediates the shift from public exterior to the more expressive interior spaces beyond. Thoughtful restoration and careful insertion of new elements ensure the street-facing façade feels both authentic to its context and unmistakably renewed

Inside Barrow House the layout flows with purposeful clarity: the ground floor opens into a generous kitchen-dining space and adjoining snug, defined by thoughtful planning that balances daily living with social interaction, while bespoke joinery and refined surfaces provide a cohesive backdrop throughout. Natural light pours in through the glazed entrance, animating warm timber and stone finishes that enrich the material palette and connect the interior to the building’s historic roots. A grand, double wrap-around staircase becomes a sculptural focal point, linking the carefully zoned living areas with the upper floor, where a serene master suite, guest bedrooms and flexible leisure spaces are arranged for privacy and comfort. Across all levels, tailored detailing and harmonious finishes reinforce a sense of refinement and continuity, elegantly marrying the building’s original character with contemporary living.
